Healthy Snacking
This year has challenged us in every way: mentally, emotionally, physically.
While we don’t seem to have control of a lot, one thing we can manage is how we move our bodies and how we nourish them. Working from home and increased inertia is definitely a challenge when it comes to managing those mid afternoon cravings. Instead of reaching for a candy bar or cookie, we have drawn up a list of our favorite healthy (er) snacks. If you prepare ahead there is less reason to reach for the pre wrapped sugar bomb.
This is also a great time to invest in some beautiful yet sustainable containers to store them, at home, or on the go.
1. Fruit and Nut Mix
This option is to treated carefully, as nuts have quite a high fat content, and dried fruits are high in sugar. That being said, in moderation this is a great option as nuts have so many health benefits.
Generally speaking, nuts are low in carbs, but high in a lot of nutrients, including vitamin E (great for skin), magnesium and selenium. They are also great antioxidants. Our favorites for our mix are: Brazil nuts, pecans, hazelnuts, almonds and walnuts.
For dried fruits, we use sultanas (very sparingly), and dried cranberries. Dried cranberries are packed with antioxidants and fiber. Their tart flavor goes perfectly with the buttery flavor of nuts.
2. Energy Balls
Once you make these you will wonder how you ever lived without them! Find the recipe here.
3. Chopped Fruit
On Sunday afternoons we cut up a pineapple and a mango and pop it in a tupperware. It’s a great snack to be able to grab when you need it, or a perfect and light dessert. Squeeze a little lime on for an extra kick!
Both pineapples and mangoes are loaded with nutrients, and are known to help digestion.
You can do the same with berries and make a colorful mix to be able to reach for easily. The are packed with antioxidants and low in sugar, so perfect for when the urge to snack comes.
4. Chopped Veg
Similarly with savory options, cut up some carrots and celery to have some flavorful and crunchy options on hand. Radishes are also an easy snack to have close at hand. They are also packed with vitamin C, calcium and potassium.
As for how to preserve all your tasty treats, we suggest you invest in some beautiful and sustainable storage solutions, that you can use for so many other things. IKEA have some beautiful glass options that come with bamboo lids (we have linked to the French website, but you should be able to find these on most stores worldwide). RICE is another of our favorite brands that offers well made and colorful storage solutions. These are particularly great with kids, as they are made in melamine. The two that we have featured below are the confetti food boxes and the melamine bowls with lids. There are so many options to choose from! Let us know if you would like us to bring you a more focused feature on sustainable storage solutions!
