“And the Mountains Echoed”; Khaled Hosseini

You may already know Khaled Hosseini's work if you have read his first novel, and international best seller, The Kite Runner. In his third novel, Hosseini tells the story of brother and sister Abdullah and Pari. Inseparable since birth, the two siblings have no idea of the fate that will await them on their journey from Shadbagh, their home village, to the big city of Kabul. In this emotionally gripping novel, Hosseini not only transports the reader from Afghanistan to the United States, Greece and Paris; but also across generations and through the eyes of unique characters from diverse social backgrounds.  

“Real Life”; Brandon Taylor

A compelling and contemporary page-turner... Brandon Taylor's first novel narrates the journey of Wallace, a gay, black PhD student coming from a small town in Alabama, among a predominantly white Midwestern group of friends met through his biochemistry doctoral program. In his gripping novel, Taylor studies the themes of race, sex, violence and grief, inviting the reader to reflect on what makes Wallace's life "real". 

“My Brilliant Friend”; Elena Ferrante

The saga of My Brilliant Friend follows the destiny of Lila and Lenù, growing in the miserable outskirts of Naples in the 1950's. While Ferrante examines the complex nature of the two girls' friendship over the years as children, teenagers, and adults; this poignant story also displays Italy's social and political changes throughout history and its impact, dividing its people into conflicting groups and movements.
