LIDO Book Club - Three Great Reads
Over the last few months we have been sharing with you snippets of the books that are on our nightstand.
We want to delve a little deeper into a few of those, and hopefully give you some inspiration for your next reads!
“Shantaram”; Gregory David Roberts
This incredible story is based on Roberts’ life. After escaping from a prison in Australia, where he was incarcerated after being convicted for staging armed robberies, Roberts managed to make his way to India, where this story takes place. There, through various twists of fate he found himself working as a slum doctor, working for a notorious crime gang, and fighting in the mountains of Afghanistan. This incredible story sucks you in from beginning to end, and we can’t recommend it enough!
“An American Marriage”; Tayari Jones
Poignant and heartbreaking, this novel looks at how lives are torn apart on the say-so of one person. A young African-American couple in Georgia, both with promising carriers, and a life together ahead of them find their future torn from them, when Roy is accused of a crime he didn’t commit. He is sentenced to twelve years in jail. This novel looks at how incarceration affects all those around the person who is sent away.
“The Parisian”; Isabella Hammad
Set at the start of the twentieth century, this novel tells the story of a pivotal moment in Palestine’s history, through the eyes of the main character, Midhat Kamal. His story takes us from Montpellier to Paris and back to his hometown in Palestine, where he must take over the family business. This story tells of how he tries to find his place in a country that is changing in a way that nobody could have anticipated, while trying to reconcile his past in France with the realities of his life.
